I just sent this to Megan Leslie, Geoff Regan, and Gerald Keddy:
Dear Megan, Geoff and Gerald,
Although Megan is my home MP, I am writing to you all as three Nova Scotia MPs, representative of all parties, to urge you to work together and do what you have to do to make Canada back into the internationally respected leader it once was. Do not let 2009 be the year historians point to as the year Canada led the slide back into denial about climate change. Peak oil is a real thing. I'm not going to even talk about GHGs, let's stick with the economics that the deniers keep going back to. Oil, all too soon will be a rare commodity. Instead of wringing the last drops out of the tarsands and hoping for crazy profit, why are we not laying the foundation for long term economic (and environmental) energy stability by investing all that money being sunk into the tar sands instead into developing our renewable industry, and improving the energy efficiency of our housing stock from coast to coast?
PLEASE DO NOT LET PRIME MINISTER HARPER'S MINORITY GOVERNMENT WEAKEN OUR COMMITMENTS. As a major first world country, what we do matters. We must be willing to own our responsibilities for the waste, pollution and GHGs we produce, and not be the 9 year old in the schoolyard who, when caught littering, points at another child and whines, "Well he does it too! He litters even MORE!!"
Please, please, please. For your voters, who overwhelmingly want this to be ok. For the children across the country who want to inherit a well-respected environmentally-sound country, not a money-grabbing polluting oil baron of a country. For yourselves, and the leaders you wanted to be when you ran for office.... tell the government that weakening our GHG reduction targets is not acceptable.
Let's be part of a smart, sustainable solution.
