A Balloon is a Fragile Friend
A balloon is a fragile friend.
You cannot hold him too tightly or closely,
You cannot let sharp words pierce his thin skin.
But
If you treat him with care,
You can hold onto his string
While he bounds aloft to the sky,
Cresting the wind,
Caressing the air.
Attached to him, you will be
A part of the sky's greatness,
A piece of the infinite, not just
Another gravity-bound clay vessel.
So you hold that string, until he
Slowly falls to earth, drained,
Or until you feel a pang of remorse
For your anchoring weight, and let go--
Letting him ride higher and deeper
Into the blue
Of all you cannot reach.
