I admit it. I was one of those who, even as the dust of the twin towers was settling and the great american ululation of loss was sounding, whispered to myself... "They could have done this themselves." Sure, it's more thriller movie plot than reality... i think... but many other conspiracy theorists have laid it out better than me in the past. A new president with a shaky mandate and a family score to settle against Iraq... visions of empire-dom and a military industrial complex getting bored and antsy in a post-Cold War world... think of the reasoning of attacking a primarily commercial target. The military / political targets were mostly missed...
Anyway, it's ridiculous head-noodling and of course no modern government would ever perpetrate such a horror against its own people (other countries being acceptable fair game)...we hope.
But this Toronto apprehension... much more civilized. No one was killed. They were caught in the nick of time. New PM, minority government, very much following the Bush model of outreach defense.... hmmmmmm.....
